ED510 Journey Week 3: Using SoftChalk for Instructional Design

 Using SoftChalk for Instructional Design

Going into this assignment, I was honestly a little nervous about using SoftChalk. It was new to me, and I wasn’t sure how intuitive the platform would be or how much time it would take to build a lesson that actually felt useful. After working through the project, I found that I ended up enjoying SoftChalk more than I expected.

One of the biggest strengths of SoftChalk was how easily I could create a structured lesson and integrate different instructional elements. I was able to combine written content, videos, images, and assessments in one place, which made the lesson feel complete and intentional. The ability to embed quizzes and knowledge checks directly into the lesson was especially useful and made the content feel more interactive rather than static.

There were also some challenges. I struggled with controlling image placement and sizing, especially early on. I wasn’t able to wrap text around images the way I wanted, or at least I didn’t yet have the skill set to do that efficiently. Sizing and aligning images also took more time than I anticipated. To work around some of this, I used ChatGPT to help generate non-copyrighted images, since many image libraries require paid access. That ended up being a very effective solution.

Overall, this project took a significant amount of time, but it was time well spent. I can clearly see how SoftChalk could be a valuable tool for developing curriculum in technical education, especially for foundational topics like metrology that don’t change frequently.

Below is a link to my first SoftChalk lesson on precision measurement, where I applied the tools and techniques discussed in this reflection.
